IANUS IT-Recommendations: 3D and Virtual Reality Edit

In contrast to static two-dimensional images, three-dimensional representations of objects can be viewed, scaled and rotated from any direction. A point in a 3D model is described by its position on the x-, y- and z-axis of a Cartesian coordinate system, whereby the z-axis in this context usually indicates the depth, more rarely the height.

Virtual reality refers to digital three-dimensional worlds that can be interacted with in real time.

3D content can be created in different ways: by manual modeling, such as reconstructions of buildings, by recording, such as a 3D scan of objects, or by automated calculation from photos, such as photogrammetry or structure from motion. Further details for the documentation that go beyond those given here depend on the method of creation. Additional information can be found in the respective sections in the chapter on research methods, whereby the sections on building research, geodesy, geodata analysis and material recording are of particular interest.
