When dealing with digital data, different requirements and conditions apply to each phase of a research project. Since research data is subject to a life cycle, decisions and work steps taken in a particular phase also have an impact on the other phases of the data cycle. When designing and planning a new research project, it is important to consider what information already exists digitally, what types of new files need to be created, what information technologies should be used and how the management of research data will be organized.
